3 signs Pakistan are not ready for T20 World Cup

When Babar Azam tried to smash one ball over the cover boundary with a significant amount of runs needed to beat Zimbabwe in the second T20I, and considerably less balls remaining, every cricket fan in the country only had one thought in mind – what if this was a T20 World Cup match? Pakistan were stunned in the second T20I on Friday by a lowly Zimbabwe, who before the series against the Men in Green weren’t even sure about their final eleven. The 19-run defeat, although very disappointing, has a lot of lessons in it and if looked at smartly, can help Pakistan iron out the flaws in their T20I cricket before they face all the big guns in this year’s T20 extravaganza. Mediocre middle-order Twitter was right in declaring that ‘Pakistan’s tail started after the number four position’ and the recent performances by them is a clear sign that they were not wrong. Apart from the consistently firing and occasionally failing top-order, which consists of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, there is no other established and mature batsman in the batting line-up. Some may make a case for Mohammad Hafeez to be included in the list, but his failure to bring the Pakistan Super League form into international cricket is a worrying sign for the country before the T20 World Cup. Other than them, Pakistan gave chances to Danish Aziz, who has shown that he is just another domestic star who withers under pressure in the international arena. Haider Ali has been the biggest star-turned-flop for Pakistan in the recent times and half of the blame for his failure rests on the shoulder of the management who haven’t provided him with consistent chances on a set number. Later in the batting line-up, Faheem Ashraf is considered to perform for Pakistan as an all-rounder but if one looks closely at his numbers in limited-overs cricket, especially in T20Is, he isn’t the Ben Stokes that the Men in Green need. The point here is not to criticise players for being unable to score runs when needed, instead they lack the cricketing brain needed to manoeuvre the situation according to its demands. This takes us to our next point. Lack of power-hitting Fakhar Zaman is undoubtedly the only cricketer in the current Pakistan line-up who can swing his bat with force and clear any boundary in any ground. He lacks the much-needed consistency, but has the guile to take the game away from the opposition on his day. Take him out of the line-up and you are left with Ashraf, Aziz and Hafeez as the big-hitters for Pakistan. And if recent form and the second T20I against Zimbabwe is any proof, then we can safely say that Pakistan still haven’t found their muscle-monster who can bludgeon bowling ups. With the boundaries square of the wicket set at nearly 70-plus meters, Pakistan batsman were caught well-inside the boundary by Zimbabwe fielders, a clear indication that they can’t hit over 60 meters if asked to smash six balls out of the park. While it may be too late to find power-hitters and prepare them, Pakistan can make their batsmen do a crash course on the skill if they want to get anywhere near the T20 World Cup silverware this year. Inability to use their brains under pressure Be it batting or bowling, cricket is more a game of focus and control than sheer brute force. One can bowl at 90mph but if the line and length are not right, the ball can easily race past the boundary. One can hit as hard as Shahid Afridi, but that doesn’t ascertain that it will clear the ropes. On Friday, Pakistan were firstly guilty of not going out with a plan to chase a paltry 119-run target. Truth is they rarely exhibit that skill of planning and execution, so it has become a redundant point to ponder over. However, in the second T20I, what Pakistan majorly lacked was the ability to read the situation and use their brains instead of their muscles. With a run-a-ball target to chase and big boundaries in sight, they could have merely ran their way to victory by converting singles into doubles and triples. Instead, they went for the impossible and tried to smash and thrash their way to victory. All in all, Pakistan have a higher probability of bouncing back and winning the third T20I to bag the series against Zimbabwe. However, instead of feeling good about it, they should hit the training setup the very next day to rectify all the mistakes that they made against minnows Zimbabwe. But if history is any indication of the future, they will celebrate and forget only to wait for every bad thing to happen again.

3 worrying signs as Pakistan beat Zimbabwe in first T20I

Pakistan were able to grab an 11-run win in the first of the three-match T20Is series in Harare, but there were some points in the game where the visitors looked like losing the plot against minnows Zimbabwe. Here are the three worrying signs which Babar Azam-led Pakistan need to ponder upon as they prepare for this year’s T20 World Cup. Struggling against slow bowlers Zimbabwe’s spinners Wesley Madhevere and Ryan Burl deserve a lot of praise for helping the hosts restrict Pakistan to a sub-standard 149 for seven in their 20 overs. Pakistan, after they were sent in to bat first, struggled against slow bowlers from the word go. They may not have given many wickets to them, but the scoring rate against them is a sign that Pakistan haven’t acclimatised to the Zimbabwean conditions. It also means that they are still accustomed to playing South Africa express pacers and were taken by surprise by the Zimbabwean bowling line-up. Pakistan may have won the first match due to some poor fielding and incapable batting, but they need to pull their socks up in order to avoid any upsets on the tour of Zimbabwe. Loss of form for Hafeez Mohammad Hafeez nearly restarted his career for Pakistan after a wonderful display of power-hitting in the Pakistan Super League sixth edition and also in the T20Is before that, but his last four matches show that he has either been found out of is struggling to middle the ball. Whatever the case is, Pakistan will be praying that Hafeez once again finds his Midas touch as they will be relying heavily on his experience and power-hitting during the upcoming T20 World Cup. A good sign against Zimbabwe was that Hafeez bowled four overs for 21 runs and took one wicket as well, but the management needs to be clear with the all-rounder that they need him to perform primarily as a batsman. His bowling may offer the captain an extra choice, but with his action remodelled and him being disallowed to bowl some of his sneaky deliveries, he may well conform to his new role as a batting all-rounder as early as possible. Over-reliance on top order Pakistan are turning into India of the 2010s, where the top order trio of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli formed the core of the batting line-up. The 2017 Champions Trophy final was a testament to the fact that if you could get these three out early, you could easily beat India. Mohammad Amir accounted for all three of them and Pakistan lifted the trophy with ease that year. (What a wonderful memory to cherish always). Like that same India team, Pakistan are now relying more than ever on Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman to fire for them. We discussed that Hafeez needs to reaffirm his form and occupy the number four spot more responsibly, but Pakistan needs to find consistent performers on the number five, six and seven positions as well. Shuffling Haider Ali won’t help Pakistan turn him into a star hitter, a fact that the team management should’ve realised until now and trying newbies, who are kicked out after three to four matches, won’t help either. Pakistan needs to form a solid playing XI right now and they need to find one replacement for each position as early as possible, so when they field a team in the T20 World Cup, the eleven players know each other’s roles and responsibilities.

Can Babar Azam bring the T20 World Cup home for Pakistan?

Pakistan have been considered cornered tigers for a good part of their cricketing history. Whenever they are pushed into adversity, they bloom and leave everyone astounded to say the least. The silverware of the 1992 World Cup, winning the World T20 in 2009 and the latest endeavour where Pakistan was the lowest-ranked side in the 2017 Champions Trophy, but won the tournament after losing humbly to India in the opener are a testament to the fact that whenever you count them out, they will jump right in with a bang. With such a cricketing culture in place, it is a surety that the cricketers produced by Pakistan would also have the same characteristic in their personalities. They blossom when someone tries to smother them, they break their shells when they are considered weaklings and they thrive in the face of adversity and criticism. Babar Azam on Wednesday scored an uncharacteristic but majestic century when Pakistan needed someone to do the near-impossible – chase a 200-plus target in T20Is, a feat the Men in Green have seldom pulled off. Earlier, after the second T20I, Babar had been criticised by anyone and everyone for his slow, nearly run-a-ball fifty en route a 140-run total, which South Africa chased with ease. Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar asked what would India skipper Virat Kohli or West Indies swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle do with fifty balls. His condescending tone and remarks were uncalled for, considering Babar has been the most consistent batsman for Pakistan in the past four to five years in all formats. Nearly one and a half day later, Babar told, actually showed Akhtar, what Kohli and Gayle may not be able do with those 50 balls. Babar hit 15 fours and mere four sixes to score 122 off just 59 balls in over an hour of batting to break South African second-string bowling side’s confidence, and give Akhtar an apt reply. While Rizwan’s unbeaten 73-run contribution should not be ignored, Babar can be accredited for creating the mood with skilful stroke-making and pin-point shots between gaps for the successful chase of a 204-run target. At no point during his innings he had to resort to rash hitting, but instead relied on his ‘strengths’ of playing balls on their merit and scoring more boundaries than maximums to take Pakistan home safely. Now the premise that Pakistan team and Pakistan players only come to the party when there is a challenge involved holds true for the majority, but Babar is that one unusual rarity that occurs in the Pakistan cricket cosmos in nearly a million years -- to be honest, it never happened before. Babar, like other Pakistani cricketers loves to reply to criticisers with exceptional performances, but more importantly he knows that one is not supposed to become complacent when there is no calling. He would treat South Africa Kagiso Rabada and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani with the same respect and would play every match and every innings like a World Cup final. This mere characteristic has enabled him to perform better than any other batsman you have ever seen bat at the age of 26 for Pakistan. With the T20 World Cup fast approaching this year, for the first time in their recent history, Pakistan will be looking towards a batsman rather than a bowler or an all-rounder to help them lift the trophy. He showed on Wednesday that he can do it single-handedly, imagine what he would be able to pull off with a little support from the other 10 guys. People are praying for Babar to continue this hot run of form with the bat till the T20 World Cup, while the right thing to hope for would be that he continues to stay away from the pits of complacency. High praise or at times weaker oppositions can do that to you, but Babar has proven that he is above it, let’s hope he stays there.

3 talking points from second Pakistan-South Africa T20I

Pakistan have played some of their best cricket during their ongoing tour of South Africa, where they won the three-match ODI series 2-1 and then went on to start the four-match T20I series with a win. However, in the second match of the series, they looked out of ideas against a second-string South Africa bowling side, which lacked the likes of Ngidi, Rabada and Nortje. With such a weakened bowling attack causing problems for a first-choice Pakistan side, it has become quite clear that the Babar Azam-led unit is still not strong enough to beat anyone and everyone when the T20 World Cup starts at the latter end of 2021. Inconsistency and lack of temperament is the word here as five batsmen were caught while attempting to hit the ball out of the park. Here are the three talking points from the second T20I between Pakistan and South Africa. Useless criticism on Babar Social media was angry over Babar for scoring a run-a-ball fifty when the team needed a big innings from the captain. However, Babar’s innings could be categorised more as a sensible knock rather than a lazy one. If he hadn’t contributed those carefully scored 50 runs, then the Pakistani bowlers wouldn’t have gotten any fighting chance to save the second T20I. Although Babar needs to improve his power-hitting at the latter end of the innings in both T20Is and ODIs, there is still no doubt that he is the most consistent batsman in Pakistan’s line-up. Instead of uselessly criticising him for not scoring a six on every ball, we should be thankful that after so many years, we finally have a batsman as consistent as him. How to ruin a batsman’s career Haider Ali is turning into a classic case of exceptional promise but zero delivery. The kid came into limelight courtesy some great hitting and, on occasions, classy stroke play, however Pakistan did what they do best with any budding talent – ruined his career. Haider may have made his name using big shots, but if Pakistan wanted to make a star, the next Babar as some say, out of him, they shouldn’t have restricted him to one format only. Haider should be allowed to improve his temperament, his innings building strategy and his conversion of fifties into hundreds through ODI and Test experience. Right now it clearly seems that he is told to go out and hit every ball out of the park rather than develop an innings for Pakistan. Such threatening roles for upcoming players ruin their career more often than not. Haider is on that same path of destruction. Someone needs to stop him, calm him down and help him learn the art of constructing a well-paced innings, even if he’s playing a T20 match. Can Pakistan trust their batting? The first point in everyone’s mind when we talk about Pakistan cricket team’s weakness is batting. Even though Pakistan’s fielding sometimes makes their batting look better, but the perennial dilemma for the Men in Green has always been whether their willow wielders will deliver when needed. With the T20 World Cup nearly here and with another one to follow in 2022, Pakistan will be licking their lips at the sight of the trophy. Fakhar Zaman’s recent form, Muhammad Hafeez’s renewed aggression with the bat, Babar’s consistent runs, Muhammad Rizwan scoring heavilyt at the opening spot means Pakistan now have multiple match-winners in their line-up, focus on batting match-winners. However, the second T20I against South Africa was a sign that the batting heroes still haven’t found consistency in their performances. They now have more good days, but still the number of bad days is significant. The next two T20Is will help us understand where Pakistan stand in regards to the upcoming T20 World Cup. Let’s hope and pray we go into the tournament with confidence in our batting, rather than on the back foot.
