Unfair to compare other Pakistani batters to Babar: Yasir Hameed

Pakistan came back from Sri Lanka with a few positives, but once again there are more questions to be answered and less answers to already posed questions for the Test side. Pakistan won the first Test match against Sri Lanka on a turning pitch at Galle, by chasing a record total in the fourth innings. Abdullah Shafique was the stand-out performer at the top of the batting order, while captain Babar Azam was in usual all-class mode for the tourists. However, come the second Test, the Pakistani batting line-up, which looked rock-solid just a few days ago in the fourth innings of the first Test, started showing cracks. Babar was once again seen playing the anchor role for the tourists, but no other batter was able to inspire Pakistan, and churn out a draw at minimum in the second Test for the series victory. Former Pakistan batter Yasir Hameed says while other players should have performed in the second match, it is unfair to compare them to Babar. “Babar has a different class,” said Hameed, who represented Pakistan in 25 Tests. “It is not good to rely on one batter, but comparing players like Imam and Shafique to Babar is not right. Every player has a different quality. The way Babar holds the crease is incomparable.” Agha Salman was given a chance in both Sri Lanka Tests and was able to score a fifty in the first innings of the second Test, but Yasir feels more players should be identified from the domestic circuit. He named Saud Shakeel as the one who deserves a chance in Tests. “We need to identify more batters, who score consistently in domestic circuit. Saud Shakeel deserves a chance. Agha Salman did score a fifty, but that too after three to four innings (sic).” Yasir also complained about Pakistan not having a specialist number six batter in Tests. “We need to invest in a number six batter. We haven’t had a good number six after Asad Shafiq. They tried Faheem Ashraf on that spot, but then he disappeared too. We need a regular number six in our Test side.” Earlier, Australia also suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the second Test after they had won the first match by 10 wickets. Yasir thinks Pakistan’s performance is also down to the conditions in Sri Lanka, which suit the home side more. “We need to see that the conditions in Sri Lanka were not easy. There was moisture in the pitch and also pitches were turning way too much. It is not easy to bat in such conditions.” On the performance of wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan, former opener said he may be suffering from fatigue. “Maybe, it is fatigue. Form is temporary, but Rizwan is hardworking and will make a comeback. However, we do need a backup for Rizwan,” said Yasir. On the note of resting players regularly, Yasir called for a systemic change so that any rested player isn’t afraid of losing his place in the side. “We need a systemic change. Whenever we make a player sit out, he is afraid that someone may come in, give performances and replace him. We need to give everyone surety that they have their own place in the team. This gives players the much-needed breathing room.”

Commonwealth Games: Inam, Bismah proud to carry Pakistan flag

Pakistan’s top wrestler Muhammad Inam believes the honour of bearing the flag for the country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is huge for him and he wants to make sure he also finishes the games with that flag, as the honour goes to the player with the best performance in the Games. Along with Inam, Pakistan women’s team captain Bismah Maroof will also be carrying the flag among women. Pakistan is fielding a contingent of 104 players in 12 sports. “I feel it is a huge honour when a player represents the country out of more than 220 million Pakistanis in one’s own weight and sport,” Inam told The Express Tribune. “Then to bear the flag from among the entire contingent in the opening or closing ceremony and that becomes even bigger of an honour. I can’t thank Allah enough for keeping me among his chosen few who to do the honours for the country.” Inam will be representing Pakistan in wrestling’s 86kg freestyle event that will begin on August 5, Friday in Birmingham. “There are two types of flag bearing that happen,” explained Inam. “One is at the beginning and one is at the closing. The one at the closing is a lot closer to my heart because usually the athlete that gives the best performance carries the flag at the closing ceremony. I want to perform so well for my country in my event that I raise the flag at the end too.” Inam has been one of the best athletes that Pakistan has produced. The three-time World Beach Wrestling Champion and the 2019 World Beach Games gold medallist has been the flag bearer for the country on numerous occasions. Each time he said it was special. He also won the Commonwealth Games gold medals twice, once in 2010 and then in 2018. “My target will be to do my best and carry the flag in the end too, just like I did at the World Beach Games and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. I have carried the flag five to six times before and each time it has been a huge honour. Even now I am praying that Allah helps me, he has been kind and if I get to carry it at the closing that will be such good fortune for me,” said the 2016 Asian Beach Games gold medallist. On the other hand, Bismah highlighted that the women’s cricket team is being featured at the Commonwealth Games for the first time and hence it is a huge honour for the girls. They will be playing in the Twenty20 format. “Carrying the flag at the Commonwealth Games is a very proud moment for me. This is the first time we are participating at the Commonwealth Games so we are all very excited. We want to do well, and definitely our aim is to win the gold medal. “I want to send my best wishes to all the athletes participating for Pakistan in the game,” Bismah said in a 30-second video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Pakistan is competing in athletics, badminton, boxing, cricket, hockey, gymnastics, judo, squash, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling and para-athletics. So far Pakistan has won 75 medals in the Commonwealth Games since their debut in 1954, with 25 gold, 24 silver and 26 bronze medals. Pakistan is ranked 15th among the nations on the all-time medal tally. This time 72 nations are competing at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia consider Maxwell as spin all-rounder

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell remains in Australia's plans for the second Test against Covid-hit Sri Lanka on an expected turner at Galle, skipper Pat Cummins said Thursday. Maxwell, a batsman who bowls off-spin, will fight for a place in the team with fast bowler Mitchell Starc as the tourists look to clinch the series in the final match starting Friday. Cummins said he will announce the XI at the toss. "Same 12 (as in the last match), we are going to have a look at the wicket today, maybe in the morning as well and see what they end up doing with it," Cummins told reporters after having a first look at the pitch. "The wicket may be different to last week," he said. "Last week we probably didn't need two quicks but we know Mitchell Starc's class, so wait and see." Cummins said Maxwell, who last played a Test in 2017, will come in "as a spinning all-rounder at (number) eight" if he is picked. "I thought he was the pick of the bowlers in the one-day series. He was excellent," Cummins said of Maxwell who took five wickets in his team's 3-2 ODI loss to Sri Lanka. "You feel like you can easily get 15 to 20 overs out of him." The tourists won the opener by 10 wickets inside three days with off-spinner Nathan Lyon taking nine wickets. Cummins said anyone getting a game in the sub-continent has an eye on next year's tour to India, where Australia will play four Tests across February and March. Starc was the leading Australian bowler with 24 scalps when the tourists were whitewashed in their 2016 trip to Sri Lanka, but Cummins said the veteran quick would understand the team call if he misses out. "He'll be fine. It's purely conditions-based," said Cummins. "They know their quality. Mitch Starc was the leading wicket-taker here last time. They're great team players. They know their worth to the team." Sri Lanka have been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak with Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando all testing positive for the virus. The hosts had already reinforced their spin bowling contingent with the addition of Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage and Prabath Jayasuriya along with all-rounder Lakshitha Manasinghe, who bowls off-spin. Lakshan Sandakan, a left-arm wrist-spinner who last played a Test in 2018, was Thursday added to the squad as further cover. Cummins said they have some knowledge about Sri Lanka's additions, especially mystery spinner Theekshana and left-arm orthodox Wellalage -- both of whom await a Test debut after their one-day exploits. "Two spinners who we saw quite a bit of in the one-day series," said Cummins. "Not too much extra planning. We'll wait and see. We feel like we have been lucky to avoid it (Covid) so far," said the fast bowler.

Smith doubts England's style

Steve Smith said England's new attacking approach to Test cricket was exciting but expressed doubts over whether it could stand up to the heat of Australian bowling. England have won all four Test under new coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, crushing world Test champions New Zealand 3-0 in June before chasing down a record 378 against India this week. Smith said England's batters may not fare so well against the Australian bowling attack of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. "It's been exciting. I'm just intrigued to see how long it lasts, if it's sustainable," Smith told reporters before Australia's second Test against Sri Lanka begins on Friday in Galle. "If you come in on a wicket that's got some grass on it and Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and Starc are rolling in at you, is it going to be the same? “I'm intrigued by it all ... Is it going to work every time? I don't know." Smith added that there was no lingering ill-feeling from his mix-up with Usman Khawaja after his dismissal in the opening Test in Galle, which Australia won by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The 33-year-old stormed off after being run out for six and his reaction drew criticism from former Australia captains Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor. "I hate getting run out. I think anyone does," Smith said. "I was pretty upset. That happens in the game. I had to keep moving forward and that's part of the game. "I spoke to Uz straight after, it was pretty chilled. Mix-ups happen and we keep moving on."
