2022 Asia Cup: India eye top group spot

India would be on cloud nine after beating Pakistan in their 2022 Asia Cup opener, courtesy a superb performance by the pacers and later, a cool and calm finish by all-rounder Hardik Pandya to bag the all-important two points. After the 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of Pakistan at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai, India came into the Asia Cup wondering if they’d be able to overcome a new and improved green side, led by skipper Babar Azam. The match went till the last over, filled with nail-biting moments for both teams, but the Men in Blue walked out of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium victorious, and with a sigh of relief that they are nearly through to the Super Fours. Come their second group match against Hong Kong, India would be planning to test out a few new strategies and possibly iron out a few flaws which they showcased against an inspired Pakistani bowling attack. Pace sensation Naseem Shah, making his T20I debut, was on fire against India from the word go, bagging the wicket of KL Rahul and later in-form Suryakumar Yadav, both cleaned up with pacey deliveries. He was limping due to cramps in the final over of his spell, but somehow mustered the courage to bowl two more deliveries, for team and for his captain. Right-arm pacer Haris Rauf also pulled his leg muscles but kept breathing fire before the penultimate over, where three boundaries off his over made the chase easy for India. India would be wary of their batsmen struggling against genuine pace, even in the UAE conditions which are more conducive to spinners, but they’ll be happy to see their own pacers display form in the opener. It was the first time in the history of T20Is, that Indian pacers bagged all 10 wickets, a number which would boost India’s confidence when they take on Hong Kong, a team 19 spots below the Rohit-led side. Pandya will once again be the one in the spotlight with both his bowling and his batting, after he delivered figures of 25-3 in his four overs against Pakistan. He later scored unbeaten 33 off 17, including a six off spinner Mohammad Nawaz in the final over to guide his team past the finish line. Hong Kong’s chances Hong Kong might not have proven credentials of bringing down cricket’s goliaths, but due to the uncertainty of the T20 format, they’ll be hopeful of giving India a run for their money on Wednesday. Hong Kong beat the UAE to qualify for the 2022 Asia Cup as the sixth team in the event. They’ll be looking towards their captain Nizakat Khan to lead the way with his all-round capabilities, while batter Babar Hayat will also try to throw as many runs in the mix as possible to try and guide his side to a victory over India. Nizakat averages 26-plus with the strike-rate of over 113 in the 10 T20 matches he has played, while Hayat has scored 217 runs in eight matches, striking at over 134 in the shortest format. In the bowling department, spinner Ehsan Khan and pacer Aizaz Khan would be their best bet as they attempt to down one of the best batting line-ups in T20Is. Ehsan boasts 20 wickets in the 10 matches he has played, while Aizaz has dismissed 15 batters in his 10 outings.

Afghans eye Bangladesh scalp after Sri Lanka

As the 2022 Asia Cup breathes with a day-long break after the high-intensity Pakistan-India clash in Dubai on Sunday, the action returns to the fabled Sharjah ground in the UAE as on-fire Afghanistan face a low on confidence Bangladesh. Afghanistan came as minnows into the event, alongside Hong Kong, but their outright domination over one of the Asian giants, Sri Lanka, made it pretty evident that they’re not in it to fill the spots only. A brilliant display of fast-bowling by Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveenul Haq to start off the Asia Cup was a treat to watch, even more so because Afghanistan are known to rely on spinners, Rashid Khan et all to win matches. However, with their pacers firing on all cylinders against Sri Lanka, bringing the Islanders down to 5-3 in just the second over, sent a warning to all others – write them out at your own peril. Afghanistan came into the Asia Cup after losing to Ireland in a T20I series, but their perfect eight-wicket victorious start must have given them enough confidence to make it to the Super Fours. Familiarity with the UAE conditions is also an added advantage for the Mohammad Nabi-led side, as they’ve played majority of their cricket in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, history and stats are also in favour of Afghanistan as they’ve downed Bangladesh on five occasions as compared to three losses in T20Is. Also, the Sharjah ground favours spinners as they’ve garnered better average, economy and strike rate than pacers in the past year – something Afghanistan would be happy to take into consideration. Bangladesh’s form Bangladesh would have been watching Afghanistan thrashing Sri Lanka with very keen focus. The Tigers recently lost both their white-ball series against Zimbabwe, throwing their confidence into a downward spiral, but the defeats came without the presence of veterans Shakibal Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in the squad. Shakib will also become the third Bangladesh cricketer to complete his 100 T20Is, after Madmudullah and Mushfiqur. The two will play for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup, together with bowling all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin; the perfect boost for them to make their maiden claim for the continental trophy. Injuries to Litton Das and Nurul Hasan have made way for Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Naim, but Bangladesh would’ve liked the first two, as they recently showed promise in the T20 format. In focus Fazalhaq Farooqi: The 21-year-old left-arm pacer burst into limelight with the very first over he bowled in the 2022 Asia Cup against Sri Lanka. Perfect line and length, control and pitching the ball in the right areas saw him clean up the Sri Lankans top-order, setting up the match for an easy Afghanistan win. With such an amazing performance in his first match at the Asia Cup, Farooqi’s confidence would be sky high when he is asked to open the bowling against Bangladesh. Shakibal Hasan: Once the number one all-rounder in the world, Shakib is still the star of the Bangladesh side with both bat and ball. He has shown personal and cricketing maturity after he returned from a ban and that will show when he takes on Afghanistan in Sharjah. Returning to T20Is and that too as captain after three years will give Shakib the much-needed impetus to perform well against Afghanistan and hopefull bag a win for his team.

3 talking points before Pakistan-India clash

While one of cricket’s biggest rivalries, the Ashes between England and Australia, is a regular fixture every year, Pakistan-India contests have been a rare sight for sport’s fans in the past decade. The political tension between the two Asian neighbours has resulted in no bilateral series being played, rendering a five-day contest a near impossibility. However, international events come to the rescue with at least one guaranteed fixture between Pakistan and India. Last year the two countries squared off in the T20 World Cup and this year they’ll again clash in the shortest format extravaganza in Australia, but before that, they’ll face each other at least twice in the August 27-September 11 Asia Cup in the UAE. Here are the three talking points before the two favourite teams meet in the 2022 Asia Cup on Sunday. Pakistan’s pace battery has been heavily reliant on left-arm fast-bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi since his arrival on the international stage. Some are calling it lack of load management, others just bad luck as Shaheen has been left out of Asia Cup due to a knee injury, which he sustained during fielding against Sri Lanka in Tests. Whatever the case, come the India match on Sunday, Pakistan will feel his absence as they weren’t even able to replace him with a left-arm pacer, one of Rohit Sharma and co’s biggest weaknesses. The 22-year-old, right-arm pacer Mohammad Hasnain was picked to replace him over all-rounder Hasan Ali, but young all-rounder Mohammad Wasim Jr’s injury meant Hasan was asked to join the squad at the last minute. Indian batting star Virat Kohli has lost his Midas touch, which saw him lose captaincy to Rohit Sharma in all three formats, but if there is one opposition that he likes to score runs against, it is Pakistan. Even in the 10-wicket loss to Pakistan at last year’s T20 World Cup, he was India’s top-scorer in the match. Kohli met with Shaheen on the sidelines of practice, where the Pakistani pacer was heard saying ‘we’re praying for to you regain your form’. Though it was a great gesture from one cricketing prodigy to a veteran of the game, Shaheen in his heart wouldn’t want his prayer to come to fruition during the Asia Cup, or at least against Pakistan. But class is permanent and form is temporary will prove true once again, and Kohli will start finding the middle of his bat and pile up centuries. If is not the question here, just when. While a large amount of focus is set on the Pakistan-India clash, there are others eyeing the Asia Cup title too. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and minnows Afghanistan and Hong Kong are also a part of the six-team event, where the T20 format allows anyone to take the game away within the span of a few balls. One good day for Hong Kong can spoil the party for Pakistan or India in Group A. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s spin attack can wreak havoc on Bangladesh or Sri Lanka to halt their progress to the Super Four stage. Pakistan have confidence on their side courtesy recent wins, but apart from nearly-always in-form Babar Azam, no other batter has shown consistency in run-scoring. Thus, the Men in Green will face to tread carefully if they want to make it to the final of the Asia Cup and win a third trophy. They’ll have to come up with game plans against other teams too, apart from their perennial rivals India. For India, it is just the case of who wins the match for them on a given day. With a plethora of match-winners in their midst, be it in batting or bowling, they’re the top pick to add an eighth Asia Cup title to their trophy case.

2022 Asia Cup: Pakistan, India are favourites, says Sana Mir

A mini T20 World Cup, the 2022 Asia Cup, will kick off in the hot and humid UAE from Saturday, with the Asian cricketing giants putting on display their prowess in the six-team event. All the headlines before the event included either Pakistan or India and usually both countries’ names as the build-up to the cricketing extravaganza was focused on the arch-rivals facing off, probably at least thrice, in the Asia Cup. Pakistan and India are pitted in the same group (read commercial benefits) with a qualifier Hong Kong. Meanwhile Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan make up the second group. Top two teams from each group will round up in the Super fours, where, once again, the top two teams will play for the coveted Asia Cup trophy. The event kicks off with Afghanistan squaring off against Sri Lanka, with a spin-versus-spin duel on display, while the first blockbuster match of the Asia Cup, the Pakistan versus India match, is scheduled for Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. “It is difficult to predict anything in the T20 format. I believe Pakistan and India are favourites, but I will be really interested to see what Sri Lanka can do. Afghanistan have a potent spin attack, but Pakistan and India are clear pre-tournament favourites,” said former Pakistan women’s team skipper Sana Mir when asked who she thinks can win the 2022 Asia Cup. “We can’t take Bangladesh lightly too because they have a good track record in the Asia Cup.” Meanwhile, when confronted with the same question, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Sami replied, “Pakistan,” even before the question could be completed. The reason? “They’re winning, so confidence is high,” Sami explained succinctly. The T20 tournament, which was scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka, was shifted to the UAE because of the Island nation facing an economic and political turmoil. But apart from the added heat in the UAE, nothing will be different as spin-friendly pitches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah will see teams trying to quickly run through overs and potentially batting orders, courtesy all kinds of spinners at their disposal. “India’s spin attack is pretty good. They have a left-arm spinner, an off-spinner and a wrist-spinner too. Afghanistan obviously have Rashid Khan which makes them the team with the best spin attack in the UAE conditions.” Sami on the other hand was confident that it will be an all-spin show in the Asia Cup. “All the spinners will be effective in the UAE,” said Sami, when asked who will rule the bowling charts in the event. Shaheen’s absence One of the biggest news that came out before the Asia Cup started was the injury of Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, the chief destructor of India during Babar Azam and co’s 10-wicket win over India at last year’s T20 World Cup. While Pakistan will feel his absence dearly, the event itself will lack shine due to the absence of one of premier pacers of the current generation, Shaheen. “Shaheen’s absence will make a difference. India have always been vulnerable to left-arm pacers. We couldn’t even replace Shaheen with a left-arm seamer. Pakistani left-armers have always given Indian batting a tough time be it Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan or Shaheen,” said Sana on the topic. “Shaheen will be the one important factor which is missing in Pakistan’s bowling attack, and in favour of India. “But hopefully, I am proven wrong by the Pakistani right-arm seamers,” Sana added optimistically. Sami, however, showed no hint of doubt and put all his bets on Pakistan without any hesitation. “Pakistan will miss Shaheen, but they’re on a winning spree so they have confidence on their side. Also the conditions will favour Babar and co.” Pakistan’s strength When asked about what Pakistan’s strength will be during the Asia Cup, Sana didn’t choose batting or bowling, instead she put the burden of responsibility on the all-rounders. She also feels that the perfect ‘balance’ of the Pakistan squad is what makes them dangerous going into the tournament. “In the recent past, Pakistan’s batting has been its strength. With Shaheen missing, bowling seems a little weak. However, Pakistan’s overall team is balanced this time,” explained Sana. “We have all-rounders like Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Khushdil Shah and also Iftikhar Ahmed who can pitch in match-winning knocks. Although other teams have good all-rounders too, but overall, you cannot single out one department as Pakistan’s strength this time because the squad is quite balanced.”

Cricket Australia target sport's inclusion at 2032 Olympics

Cricket Australia have targeted the inclusion of the sport at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics as part of a strategic plan to expand participation and maintain the game's position at the heart of the country's sporting culture. The ambitious "Where the Game Grows” plan released on Monday aims to double the number of children aged five to 12 playing the game to 210,000 over the next five years, with girls making up 60,000 of that tally. Another of the targets is to get cricket back into the Olympics for the first time since 1900 - if that goal has not already been achieved at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Cricket has been shortlisted for possible inclusion at the 2028 Olympics along eight other sports and the International Cricket Council (ICC) will make a presentation to organisers later this month. The host city can include any sport but needs the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Women's Twenty20 cricket made its Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham last month with Australia beating India by nine runs in the final to claim the inaugural gold medal. Brisbane has plans to rebuild the city's Gabba cricket ground as a 50,000-seater Olympic Stadium to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2032 Games. The inclusion of cricket in the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics is part of the "sustainable future" strand of the plan, which also aims to improve fan experience, expand the grassroots and continue Australia's success on the world stage. Cricket Australia has set a target of at least three ICC tournament triumphs over the next five years for both the men's and women's national teams. "This strategy contains both a vision and a clear plan for how we can achieve bold, transformative change while also meeting our core responsibilities," said CA chief executive Nick Hockley.  "I would like to thank everyone across the game for their passion and commitment as we work to unite and inspire everyone to love and play cricket, and in so doing make cricket a sport for all that makes Australians proud."

Australia win historic cricket gold

Australia won the first women's cricket gold medal in Commonwealth Games history on Sunday as Scotland's Laura Muir captured the 1500m title on the final night of athletics. On the penultimate day of competition in Birmingham, England's women won hockey gold and Australia beat Jamaica in the netball final. With just a few events to go on Monday, Australia lead the way with 66 golds, 11 ahead of hosts England. Hot favourites Australia held their nerve to beat India by nine runs in a Twenty20 thriller in front of a big Edgbaston crowd. Opener Beth Mooney top-scored with 61 as Australia made 161-8 in their 20 overs in the warm sunshine. India appeared to be on course for a shock win when they were cruising at 118-2. But the dismissals of Jemimah Rodrigues (33) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (65) sapped their momentum and they fell frustratingly short. Australia partied on the pitch as the lights went out around the stadium. "It's absolutely huge," said left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen. "We are blessed enough to be part of some winning World Cup teams but to win the first gold medal for women's cricket in the Commonwealth Games, you're only ever going to do that once." Victory underlines the dominance of Australia's women, who are also world champions in the 20-over and 50-over formats. In the bronze medal match earlier on Sunday, New Zealand coasted to an eight-wicket win over England. Muir ended her Commonwealth Games campaign with a flourish by winning gold in the 1500m at the Alexander Stadium. The 29-year-old's team-mate, 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan, just failed in her bid for memorable double, finishing second behind Kenya's impressive world silver medallist Beatrice Chebet in the women's 5,000m. Muir, who won bronze in the 800m on Saturday, kicked for glory before the bell and ran a fairly moderate field -- lacking two-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon -- ragged, timing 4min 02.75sec. The Olympic silver medallist was overjoyed, having failed to medal in 2014 and missing the 2018 Games due to veterinary exams. "You learn from it and your time will come," said Muir. "It sounds cheesy but it's true. Eight years of Commonwealths and it's been bugging me so this means a lot." Wyclife Kinyamal defended his men's 800m crown in a time of 1:47.52. It was an impressive turnaround for the 25-year-old, who finished last in the final of the world championships in July. "Eugene (the world final) was disappointing but it is just like any race," he said. "Because if today you win, tomorrow you lose. "I guess because I failed there, I looked forward to coming here to defend my title." New Zealand cyclist Aaron Gate won the men's road race to collect his fourth gold medal of the Commonwealth Games. "Three felt great and I was super happy with that," said Gate, who won three track events earlier in the Games. "I came here today and managed to help the team, and if the opportunity arose to go for a fourth one I just had to grab it with both hands." In the women's race, Australia's Georgia Baker won her third gold of the games. England won hockey gold for the first time after holding off a fightback from Australia to win 2-1. Second-quarter goals from Holly Hunt and Tess Howard ultimately provided decisive 24 hours after the men's team had suffered semi-final despair at the hands of Australia. Australia's men, who are six-time defending champions, take on India in the final on Monday. There was more joy for Australia in the netball competition, with a 55-51 over Jamaica in the final. Australia also shone at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, wrapping up the diving competition in style. Cassiel Rousseau took the men's 10m platform title and Maddison Keeney won her second gold of the games in the women's 3m springboard. England's Delicious Orie won super heavyweight gold on a busy night of boxing, beating India's Sagar Ahlawat. India won three other golds in boxing but Northern Ireland took five, including a special double for Aidan Walsh and his sister Michaela.

Unfair to compare other Pakistani batters to Babar: Yasir Hameed

Pakistan came back from Sri Lanka with a few positives, but once again there are more questions to be answered and less answers to already posed questions for the Test side. Pakistan won the first Test match against Sri Lanka on a turning pitch at Galle, by chasing a record total in the fourth innings. Abdullah Shafique was the stand-out performer at the top of the batting order, while captain Babar Azam was in usual all-class mode for the tourists. However, come the second Test, the Pakistani batting line-up, which looked rock-solid just a few days ago in the fourth innings of the first Test, started showing cracks. Babar was once again seen playing the anchor role for the tourists, but no other batter was able to inspire Pakistan, and churn out a draw at minimum in the second Test for the series victory. Former Pakistan batter Yasir Hameed says while other players should have performed in the second match, it is unfair to compare them to Babar. “Babar has a different class,” said Hameed, who represented Pakistan in 25 Tests. “It is not good to rely on one batter, but comparing players like Imam and Shafique to Babar is not right. Every player has a different quality. The way Babar holds the crease is incomparable.” Agha Salman was given a chance in both Sri Lanka Tests and was able to score a fifty in the first innings of the second Test, but Yasir feels more players should be identified from the domestic circuit. He named Saud Shakeel as the one who deserves a chance in Tests. “We need to identify more batters, who score consistently in domestic circuit. Saud Shakeel deserves a chance. Agha Salman did score a fifty, but that too after three to four innings (sic).” Yasir also complained about Pakistan not having a specialist number six batter in Tests. “We need to invest in a number six batter. We haven’t had a good number six after Asad Shafiq. They tried Faheem Ashraf on that spot, but then he disappeared too. We need a regular number six in our Test side.” Earlier, Australia also suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the second Test after they had won the first match by 10 wickets. Yasir thinks Pakistan’s performance is also down to the conditions in Sri Lanka, which suit the home side more. “We need to see that the conditions in Sri Lanka were not easy. There was moisture in the pitch and also pitches were turning way too much. It is not easy to bat in such conditions.” On the performance of wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan, former opener said he may be suffering from fatigue. “Maybe, it is fatigue. Form is temporary, but Rizwan is hardworking and will make a comeback. However, we do need a backup for Rizwan,” said Yasir. On the note of resting players regularly, Yasir called for a systemic change so that any rested player isn’t afraid of losing his place in the side. “We need a systemic change. Whenever we make a player sit out, he is afraid that someone may come in, give performances and replace him. We need to give everyone surety that they have their own place in the team. This gives players the much-needed breathing room.”
