Friday’s UK sports events suspended

Sporting events in Britain scheduled for Friday, including Test cricket and European golf's PGA Championship, have been cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. British horse racing chiefs also pressed the pause button as tributes poured in for the late British monarch from across the sporting world. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Friday's play between England and South Africa in the third Test at the Oval would not take place. Thursday's first day in London was washed out without a ball bowled. The three-match series is locked at 1-1. "Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Friday's play between England and South Africa Men at The Oval, along with all scheduled matches in the (women's domestic) Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, will not take place," said an ECB statement. Play at the PGA Championship at Wentworth, near London, was suspended on Thursday evening when news broke of the death of the 96-year-old monarch and it was later confirmed that there would be no play on Friday. "Out of respect for Her Majesty and the Royal Family, play has been suspended at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club for the remainder of Thursday and flags at Wentworth Club will be lowered to half-mast," a European Tour statement said. "Furthermore, no play will take place at the BMW PGA Championship on Friday and the golf course and practice facilities will be closed." Cycling's Tour of Britain, which was set to finish on the Isle of Wight on Sunday, was called off entirely after Thursday's fifth stage. Manchester United's 1-0 home defeat in the Europa League against Real Sociedad went ahead on Thursday but a minute's silence was held before kick-off and players wore black armbands. The English Football League announced the postponement of Friday's two scheduled matches, adding "a determination regarding the remainder of this weekend's scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance". It was reported that a meeting of governing bodies across a range of sports has been scheduled, where officials will set out government guidance on the official 10-day period of mourning. It is understood sports chiefs will be left to make their own judgements regarding the staging of events. The British Horseracing Authority said the sport was in mourning for the queen, who showed an intense passion for racing throughout her life. "Her Majesty has been one of the greatest and most influential supporters in the history of horse racing," the BHA said. "Her passion for racing and the race horse shone brightly throughout her life". The BHA's statement added: "It is right, therefore, that all racing is suspended for today and tomorrow as we begin to grieve Her Majesty's passing and remember her extraordinary life and contribution to our sport and our nation." Brazilian football great Pele was among huge numbers of sports stars who paid tribute to the queen. "I have been a great admirer of Queen Elizabeth II since the first time I saw her in person, in 1968, when she came to Brazil to witness our love for football and experienced the magic of a packed Maracana," he tweeted. "Her deeds have marked generations. This legacy will last forever." Former England captain and current World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont tweeted: "Her Majesty The Queen will be remembered as a much-loved, visionary monarch, who cared deeply about all people under her reign, and was an avid supporter of sport and its power to unite communities." World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said the queen had shown "exceptional leadership, grace, wisdom and fortitude". "I will never forget her total commitment to the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Coe said. "She has been a source of continuity and comfort, and she will be grievously missed by us all." The United States Tennis Association announced there would be "a moment of silence and a show photo montage" at the US Open on Thursday. A message on Twitter from Wimbledon, where the queen previously served as a patron, read: "We wish to convey our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to The Royal Family on the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen." North America's National Hockey League (NHL) posted footage from the Queen's ceremonial puck drop at a 2002 contest between the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka eye Asian glory

Sri Lanka may have won the dress rehearsal with a one-sided victory, but they will be expecting Pakistan to come out firing on all cylinders when the actual final of the 2022 Asia Cup is played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The Pakistan batting line-up fell like a deck of cards on Friday against Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva-inspired Sri Lankan bowling line-up, but Babar Azam’s quicks showed what Sri Lanka will be up against come Sunday. Right-arm pacers Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain firing in 145kph-plus thunderbolts at Sri Lanka at the start of the chase wasn’t what the top order was expecting. However, Sri Lankan batters put their new-found maturity on display to first, weather the pace storm and then, charge at the weak links, namely pacer Hasan Ali and leg-spinner Usman Qadir, to complete their confident run past the finish line. With the victory, Sri Lanka completed their ninth victory over Pakistan in T20Is as compared to 13 losses. Four out of those triumphs came in last four consecutive T20Is, three played in 2019 and one in the Asia Cup Super Fours. Many would say that Pakistan’s defeat came because they rested two of their key players, all-rounder Shadab Khan and teenage pace sensation Naseem Shah on Friday, but with two of the world’s top T20I batters playing for you, it sounds like nothing more than an excuse. "Below average batting," Wasim said while commentating on the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Super Fours game. "In general, the attitude was not there. They were not willing to take doubles by targeting the longer part of the ground. They only looked to clear the boundary against the spin," he added. Toss was also criticised for playing a major role in Sri Lanka’s win, as teams chasing in the Asia Cup have had astronomical success, but as per Pakistan’s legendary batter and captain Javed Miandad, one should be able to win in any situation, irrespective of being asked to defend or chase. While Pakistan may have to answer a lot of questions before they play the final against Sri Lanka, the only chink in the Islanders’ armour was seen when they were asked to defend a total in the very first match of the Asia Cup. Afghanistan showed the way to all other teams by restricting Sri Lanka and then chasing the target easily, but this would require Babar to ride his luck and win the toss on Sunday, something that hasn’t been working in the Pakistan captain’s favour lately. ‘The handshake’ between Babar and Indian batting star Virat Kohli before the start of the Asia Cup is being considered as the turning point in both batters’ form. Babar’s purple patch ended, while Kohli came up with two fifties and then his first-ever T20I century in the tournament. But if Pakistan are to beat Sri Lanka in the final, Babar will finally have to come up with some much-needed runs at the top of the order. His opening partner Mohammad Rizwan has been consistent in Asia Cup, but when he fell on Friday cheaply, the middle-order also collapsed showing the frailty of Pakistan’s batting order. The only find for Pakistan in the batting department has been returning all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz. His cameo against India at the unusual number four helped Pakistan down India in the Super Fours. His bowling has also helped Pakistan with economical spells and partnership-breaking wickets. Former India batter Gautam Gambhir even suggested playing Nawaz at number four in Australia for the 2022 T20 World Cup. “I reckon number four," Gambhir replied to Wasim Akram during commentary of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Asia Cup Super Fours game. "He has got all the attributes to be a world-class all-rounder. He played a blinder of a knock against India and didn't bat at number four again which is a surprise to me," he added. While there are many variables involved in the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Asia Cup final, the only thing constant is that both team will fight it out till the last ball. One to bring some happiness to their people who are struggling under a flailing economy, the other to bring smiles to the faces of people sinking under catastrophic floods.

Pakistan ready for Afghan challenge

Pakistan’s ride in the 2022 Asia Cup has been a topsy-turvy one until now, but they’ll be eyeing consistency in performances and in winning too when they face dark horses Afghanistan on Wednesday. Pakistan started their campaign with a last-over defeat against India in Dubai. Pacer Naseem Shah, debuting in T20Is, provided the spark that Babar Azam thought they’d be missing due to the absence of Shaheen Shah Afridi in the first overs. However, the teenager dismissed KL Rahul to prove he’s the future of the Pakistani pace attack. But India’s successful chase came in the last over with seven required off six balls and all-rounder Hardik Pandya hitting a six to push the team past the finish line. Pakistan would have wanted a victory to start off their Asia Cup campaign with confidence, but the loss against India didn’t provide that. However, they next faced Hong Kong and their spinners decimated the minnows’ batting line-up for paltry 38, while chasing a mammoth 193, giving the side the confidence to push forward with impetus. And that confidence was key when Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan were asked to once again face Rohit Sharma-led India in their very first Super Fours match. India hit opening bowlers Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain out of the park more often than not in the powerplays, but as soon as Nawaz and Shadab were introduced, India’s scoring rate came down. With a 182-run target to chase, Pakistan faltered early on, but Nawaz came good with the bat after performing with the ball, to help the Men in Green level the honours in the 2022 Asia Cup. Pakistan are favourites to play for the coveted continental trophy in the final, but they have to face a familiar yet inspired Afghanistan in Sharjah, a spin heaven, to make their case strong. While captain Babar is lacking his Midas touch in the Asia Cup, keeper-batter Rizwan has taken the responsibility of scoring the bulk of runs at the top of the order for Pakistan. He is currently the top-scorer in the event (192 runs), just above Indian star batter Virat Kohli (154). Apart from the star opening duo of Babar and Rizwan, left-handed batter Fakhar Zaman, and big-hitters Asif Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed are also waiting in line to prove their mettle in the event. Come the contest against Mohammad Nabi-led Afghanistan, Pakistan will once again be looking at Nawaz and Shadab to inspire the team on the spin-friendly Sharjah pitch. While Rizwan’s purple patch and batting firepower in the lower order would give them hope to chase any target. Afghanistan’s chances Afghanistan have been dealt a bad hand in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup. They have already lost to Sri Lanka in their opener, but their two matches in two days on different venues, keeping the hot UAE weather in mind, won’t make life easy for them even if they down Pakistan on Wednesday. Afghanistan will have to beat both Babar’s charges and India if they want a shot at the silverware, and their all-round performances with both bat and ball have shown that they have the ability to do it. The question is not how for Afghanistan, it is whether they’ll be able to gather themselves after losing to Sri Lanka. Captain Nabi and star spinner Rashid Khan will be the key players for Afghanistan. However, their young and energetic pace attack and the Zadran brothers have shown the potential to take the game away from oppositions on their day.
